Eagles Rumored to Have Interest in Poaching 49ers Assistant for Offensive Coordinator Job
By Michael Luciano
The Philadelphia Eagles are still searching for answers after they parted ways with offensive coordinator Mike Groh at the end of this season, and it appears that one particular assistant from the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers could be the preferred target.
Run game coordinator Mike McDaniel has been floated as a potential replacement for Groh under Doug Pederson in Philadelphia.
McDaniel was an offensive assistant with the NFC champion Falcons when Kyle Shanahan brought him over to San Francisco. While this is Shanahan's offense and he calls the plays, McDaniel can be credited with the terrific performance of the 49ers' outside zone-based running game, and the improvement of the offensive line as run blockers. Miles Sanders would certainly benefit from McDaniel coming to Philly.
Passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur, the brother of Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, was also rumored to be in the running, but that potential pairing appears to have been squashed after he signed a contract extension with the 49ers.
McDaniel might have pushed aside by the media in favor of the baby genius head coach that is Shanahan, but he was just as much a part of what made the 49ers offense so efficient this season. If he gets the job, McDaniel would be a nice new voice in the room for Pederson and the Eagles on offense.
