The Eagles Should Sign Everson Griffen and Make Their Stacked Defensive Line the Best in the NFL
By Scott Rogust
Don't let the Philadelphia Eagles' NFL Draft distract you from the fact that they had themselves quite the offseason. While Philly did trade for cornerback Darius Slay, they managed to improve their defensive line by signing top free agent nose tackle Javon Hargrave to pair alongside stud tackle Fletcher Cox. Even though Philadelphia's d-line is relatively stacked, they can still use some depth at the defensive end position.
The Eagles can easily fix that problem by signing former Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Everson Griffen.
Philadelphia improved at points this offseason, but the hated Dallas Cowboys got even better on paper, especially on the defensive line. Dallas now boasts a unit consisting of DeMarcus Lawrence, Gerald McCoy, Dontari Poe, and Tyrone Crawford, with rookies Neville Gallimore and Bradlee Anae coming off the bench. That's scary depth up front.
Yes, the Eagles will have Hargrave playing next to Cox to create havoc in the middle of the line of scrimmage. But, their edge rushers are Brandon Graham, and an inconsistent Derek Barnett, who recently had his fifth-year option declined by the team. Philadelphia desperately needs to make an addition before the start of training camp (whenever that is).
That's where Griffen can step in. The former 2010 fourth-round pick turned out to be a steal for the Vikings, as he showed his propensity of getting after the quarterback. In his ten seasons in Minnesota, Griffen recorded 355 tackles (86 for loss), 176 quarterback hits and 74.5 sacks. Plus, he'll come at a much cheaper price than Jadeveon Clowney.
