Eagles Should Swoop in and Sign Jadeveon Clowney With Seahawks Now Out of Mix
By Scott Rogust
Jadeveon Clowney didn't think he'd see a dwindling market at the end of April, but here we are. The former first overall pick intended on being the highest paid edge rusher this offseason, but no one was willing to cave into his extravagant demands. It appeared the Seattle Seahawks were willing to bring him back a few weeks ago, but that all seemed to end on Wednesday after Jarran Reed announced he was taking the No. 90 jersey number back, which previously belonged to Clowney.
Now, the opportunity has come for a contending team to swoop in and sign Clowney. No team could use Clowney's services more than the Philadelphia Eagles.
We get it, Eagles fans. You're not exactly welcoming to the idea of bringing in Clowney, who played a role in quarterback Carson Wentz suffering a scary concussion in the NFC Wild Card Round earlier this year. But you can't gloss over the fact that Philadelphia desperately needs an edge rusher.
Besides Derek Barnett and Brandon Graham, there's no quality depth at the position. Clowney easily fixes that issue. He didn't put up punishing numbers last season, but he puts constant pressure on the QB, and is very effective against the run. Any team would sign up for that.
Plus, the Eagles have engaged in an offseason battle of "anything you can do, I can do better" with the rival Dallas Cowboys. Even though the Eagles acquired cornerback Darius Slay and wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, the moves were overlooked by Dallas' additions of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Gerald McCoy, and CeeDee Lamb.
Dallas looks like overwhelming favorites to win the NFC East next season. If Philadelphia truly wants to compete with Dallas, they need to sign Clowney to save the world from insufferable Cowboys fans around the nation.
