The Eagles have been active lately, signing a handful of different players to one-year deals in hopes of filling out their roster before the preseason.

Adam Schefter reported earlier Friday that the team signed former Titans safety Johnathan Cyprien, and now the Eagles announced a new signing on the other side of the ball. The Birds agreed to terms with former Chiefs tight end Alex Ellis.

This move is nothing more than a depth signing for a team loaded at the tight end position. Zach Ertz is a top-five tight end in the league, while Dallas Goedert shined last season as a rookie and is expected to take a leap this season with the implementation of more two tight end sets.

Even more, the team re-signed Richard Rodgers, who acted as the third tight end last year when healthy, and have Josh Perkins in camp, who surprisingly played a significant role in the team's first few games of the season last year. Both know the playbook well, giving them a leg up on Ellis.

But the Eagles signed Ellis for a reason, so he should not be counted out just yet. The 26-year-old played two games for the Chiefs last season before being waived and six for the Jaguars in 2016. The formerly undrafted tight end has three career receptions and is looking to nab a roster spot on a deep Philadelphia team.

Ellis needs to leave a mark on the team in training camp if he wants to make the roster.
