Eagles' Special Teams Blunder During Onside Kick Attempt vs Dolphins Will Have Fans Enraged
By Scott Rogust
On paper, the Philadelphia Eagles were set to be one of the powerhouses in the NFC. Yet here we are, with the Eagles now sitting at 5-7 on the season after an embarrassing loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
While Philadelphia's offense was strong for the better part of the game, their defense and special teams units were brutal. From Ryan Fitzpatrick putting up ridiculous numbers on the Eagles defense, to the now-famous punter-to-kicker trick play touchdown, there's no shortage of proof.
But this is perhaps the worst. After kicking a field goal to bring their deficit to 37-31 with just under two minutes to go, the Eagles called for an onside kick, but Philly didn't recover. That's because head coach Doug Pederson decided not to put any wide receivers on the field.
How does a coach with the pedigree of Pederson fail to put a receiver on the field during an onside kick? This is malpractice, for obvious reasons.
Either way, Pederson won't be fully held accountable for the decision. That will lie at the feet of special teams coordinator Dave Fipp, especially if the losses keep coming in the final month of the season.
The Eagles had the chance to tie for the NFC East lead after the Dallas Cowboys' loss on Thanksgiving, but those plans disintegrated after the stinker they put up in South Beach.
