Eagles WR Injury Situation Means Tight Ends Must Step Up to Help Nelson Agholor
By Michael Luciano
Due to a rash of injuries, wide receiver has gone from a position of strength to a major question mark for the Philadelphia Eagles, who will face off against the undefeated Detroit Lions without deep threat DeSean Jackson or red zone target Alshon Jeffery.
This will make Nelson Agholor, normally a slot wide receiver, the No. 1 option today at wideout alongside Mack Hollins and rookie JJ Arcega-Whiteside.
We've seen Agholor try to be a No. 1 guy before, and it hasn't worked out. Today, he will face a secondary that features an All-Pro level corner in Darius Slay and a defensive head coach in Matt Patricia that will make things tough. And that means the Eagles need to do something other than simply check down to Zach Ertz 15 times in this game-- the tight end tandem he forms with Dallas Goedert needs to feature, and they need to be dynamic.
If Carson Wentz can't get the duo intimately involved in the passing attack, the this team becomes one-dimensional offensively. And that's a recipe for failure.
Jackson and Jeffery will be back in a week or two, but Agholor has a lot on his plate this afternoon in the meantime. The guy can't do it by himself. Ertz and Goedert must be prolific and threatening to keep things rolling effectively.
