Eagles Have No Reason Not to Swoop in and Trade for 49ers WR Dante Pettis as Rumors Circulate
By Brady Williams
If rumors are to be believed, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Dante Pettis could be in a different uniform next season. After catching only 11 passes for 109 yards in 2019, Pettis hasn't been a standout for the Niners.
However, with only two years of experience under hit belt, Pettis could easily bring his deep threat tendencies to the Philadelphia Eagles, and use his blazing speed to fill DeSean Jackson's role.
Pettis was drafted 44th overally in 2018, and he earned that early-round pick. He racked up 2,256 yards for the Washington Huskies with 24 touchdowns. Ideally, he's an athletic No. 2 option with a lot of upside. Things haven't worked out for him in San Francisco, but that shouldn't be a death knell for his career. The Eagles' clear need for receivers could be helped by Pettis' fresh legs -- he certainly has more of a draft pedigree than Greg Ward Jr.
The Eagles need to give Carson Wentz some targets, by any means necessary. Jackson is 33 years old now and coming off injury, and Alshon Jeffery has been wildly disappointing (and is certainly angling to be traded). With Nelson Agholor finally gone, Wentz has only inconsistency and age in his huddle. Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert are his only proven targets, but those are safety valves, not field-stretchers. He needs a guy like Pettis, and surrendering a redundant corner like Rasul Douglas would be a palatable swap.
Pettis has had a lot of trouble finding his footing in the NFL, but with a confident quarterback and some more time to adjust, he has all the components he needs to be a solid receiver in Philadelphia.
