Edwin Encarnacion's Parrot Gets Cast Removed as He Resumes Baseball Activities
By Scott Rogust
The New York Yankees have spent more time battling the injury bug this season than they have bothering with opposing MLB teams. One of the many casualties this past month was slugger Edwin Encarnacion, who suffered a fractured right wrist in a sweep of the Boston Red Sox.
However, there's been some good news lately, as Encarnacion was cleared for baseball activities, fielding ground balls and hitting off a tee on Saturday.
Encarnacion's return is on the horizon, but he's not the only one in the Yankees dugout on the way back to the everyday lineup. And no, it's not a player.
Rather, it's New York's stuffed parrot, as the plush toy representing Encarnacion got its cast removed from its right wing, concurrent with its papa's rehab.
The good news keeps getting better for Yankee fans.
A former bane of their existence, New York acquired Encarnacion from the Seattle Mariners in June for pennies on the dollar, with the goal of adding unlimited power to the team's batting order.
Since joining the Yankees, Encarnacion has posted a .238 batting average, .356 on-base percentage, and .531 slugging percentage, while hitting nine home runs and notching 27 RBI.
While there's no official timetable, Edwin Encarnacion and his parrot will be appearing in Yankee games on a daily basis by the end of the year.
