Eli Manning to Become 3rd Ole Miss Player to Have Jersey Retired
By Michael Luciano
Before Eli Manning led the New York Giants to two Super Bowls, he was one of the most hyped quarterback prospects in SEC history during his time at Ole Miss. After bringing David Cutcliffe and the Rebels so much success, Ole Miss will finally hang up Eli's No. 10.
Manning will become just the third Rebel to have his number retired, joining his father, Archie Manning, and deceased defensive back Chucky Mullins.
Archie, who made his name as a Rebel star and a New Orleans Saints legend, was the first player to have his number retired in Oxford. In fact, all speed limits on campus at Ole Miss are 18 miles per hour, in honor of Archie's college number.
While Peyton Manning decided to buck the family trend and attend a rival SEC school in Tennessee, Eli committed to his father's alma mater. Manning totaled 10,119 yards as a Rebel, throwing 81 touchdowns against 35 interceptions. Manning's best statistical season was a 31 touchdown, nine interception year in 2001, but he did place third in the Heisman voting in 2003 before Ole Miss beat Oklahoma State in the Cotton Bowl.
The Manning family name still carries a ton of weight in Oxford, and Ole Miss finally immortalized one of the greatest quarterbacks in school history.
