Envisioning the Patriots Offense if They Signed Cam Newton
By Michael Luciano
You couldn't find two quarterbacks who play more different styles of football than Tom Brady and former Carolina Panthers MVP Cam Newton. One is an immobile pocket passer who picks apart defenses before and after the snap with surgical precision, while the other is a remarkable athlete with a bazooka for a right arm and a playmaking gene that very few people have.
After passing on a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots should come to their senses and realize that signing Newton and retooling the offense to fit him is a batter option than riding with Jarrett Stidham.
Cam's arrival would mean that the Patriots would need to become a run-first team, in part due to Newton's legs and in part due to the lack of receivers. Teams around the league would kill for a RB room of Sony Michel, James White, and Damien Harris, and all three of them would need to get over 100 total touches in this offense.
Josh McDaniels made Tim Tebow work for 15 minutes, so he at least has some experience molding his offense around a mobile quarterback.
N'Keal Harry would be given more of an opportunity to create with the ball in his hands, his trademark at Arizona State. Newton loves throwing to tight ends, which means rookies Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene could be in for some serious production in Year 1.
Newton requires a lot of setup around him he wants to run the offense at peak efficiency, but McDaniels and Bill Belichick, the masters of retooling and changing, should be able to do that for a unique talent like Cam.
