Eric Ebron Describes His Ideal Role With Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers in 2020
By Jerry Trotta
The Pittsburgh Steelers have limited cap space to work with -- $5.77 million to be exact -- and that has seen fans grow irritable with general manager Kevin Colbert, who hasn't done much spending this offseason.
However, most NFL analysts would agree that signing free agent tight end Eric Ebron was a quality transaction by Pittsburgh, especially at $6 million per year.
Well, fans in the Steel City that weren't convinced of the Ebron signing certainly will be after reading his quotes on his ideal role with the team, particularly quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
“I hope to be that safety blanket, that go-to, that loved tight end that everybody wants,” Ebron said, per the Steelers team website. “That is all you hear. That Ben loves his tight end. It’s going to be pretty cool to see what we can do together. I have been texting him asking him as many questions as I can as early as I can. I want to pick his brain. If I can be his best friend and we can think the same, good things happen. That is really all I am trying to do.”
That quote should pump up Steelers Nation. After all, Pittsburgh has lacked a show-stopping threat at tight end since the days of Heath Miller.
Injuries cut Ebron's 2019 short, but this is a player that's a season removed from logging 66 receptions for 750 yards and 13 touchdowns, all career bests. The former No. 10 overall pick is clearly looking to set new career highs with Big Ben throwing his direction in 2020.
At the very least, Ebron is doing all he can to ensure that his rapport with Roethlisberger is as fruitful as possible next season.
