Evan Longoria Has Perfect Troll for Rays When Asked About Playing in Empty Stadiums Amid Coronavirus Outbreak
By Brendan Balsamo
The Tampa Bay Rays are notorious for drawing small crowds to their games. Even amid their recent run of success on the field, the club's inability to put butts in seats has long plagued the organization.
When asked about playing in empty stadiums due to the coronavirus outbreak, former Ray and current San Francisco Giant Evan Longoria saw the opportunity to roast his former team. He took it and ran with it.
Now that was absolutely ruthless.
The Rays finished the year second to last in overall attendance in 2019, hosting just 1.18 million fans, only beating out the Miami Marlins who had a total of 810,000 fans. That's an incredibly small figure, especially for a team that made a run to the playoffs and took the eventual American League champions to five games in the ALDS.
Their attendance has been so poor that there has even been inklings of possibly splitting the Rays' season between Montreal and Tampa Bay, or potentially moving the franchise to Montreal entirely.
With the league mulling just about every solution amid the coronavirus outbreak, Longoria decided to poke fun at his former club in Tampa, where not having fans in the crowd might not be all that noticeable.
