Everything Tigers Fans Need to Know About Prospects Acquired for Shane Greene and Nick Castellanos
By Jerry Trotta
The Detroit Tigers are the worst team in Major League Baseball by quite some margin -- four back in wins and one back in the loss column to the woeful Orioles.
Therefore, it was no surprise that general manager Al Avila sold some veterans ahead of Wednesday's 4 p.m. ET deadline. In two of the biggest deals of the day, the Tigers offloaded outfielder Nick Castellenos to the Cubs and All-Star reliever Shane Greene to the Braves.
Both moves should have Detroit devotees feeling better about their organization's future given the prospects they received. Let's take a closer look at the four youngsters the Tigers now have at their disposal.
Paul Richan
Richan was drafted by the Cubbies in the second round of the 2018 draft out of the University of San Diego. The 22-year-old right-hander has spent the totality of the 2019 season with Class-A Myrtle Beach and MLB Pipeline considered him Chicago's No.16 ranked prospect. Across 93 innings, Richan has logged a 10-5 record to go with a 3.97 ERA, 1.226 WHIP and 86 strikeouts.
Alex Lange
Labeled as the No. 23 prospect in the Cubs' farm system, Lange was selected in the first round back in 2017 out of LSU. Detroit fans won't be pleased to hear that the 23-year-old right-hander has endured his fair share of struggles this year. In 18 starts between Class-A Myrtle Beach and Double-A, Lange has compiled a 3-12 record along with a dreadful 5.82 ERA.
As for the Greene return package...
Joey Wentz
Wentz, selected by Atlanta in the first round out of Shawnee Mission East HS in 2016, ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the Braves lauded farm system, according to MLB Pipeline. In 20 starts (103 innings) for Double-A Mississippi, the 21-year-old southpaw has recorded a 4.72 ERA coupled with a 1.31 WHIP, and 100 strikeouts.
Travis Demeritte
There's no doubting that Demeritte has the best chance of the other three aforementioned prospects to get promoted to the big time in 2019. He is still just 24-years of age despite being a first-round selection of the Rangers back in 2013. The young center fielder had enjoyed an impressive season with Triple-A Gwinnett -- slashing .286/.387/.558 to go with 20 home runs and 74 RBI.
Richan will give him a run, but Demeritte is unquestionably the crowned jewel of both trade packages.
How are we feeling, Detroit?
