Former Boston Red Sox President and CEO Larry Lucchino underwent a successful surgery last week, the team announced Wednesday. The current Worcester Red Sox frontman, and member of John W. Henry's ownership group in Boston, was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his kidney, and was operated on at Brigham and Women's Hospital, according to team officials.

This surgery was Lucchino's third for cancer. He was treated for non-hodgkins lymphoma in 1985, and underwent a successful procedure for prostate cancer in 2002.

Lucchino served as the President and CEO of both the Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres before he joined the Sox in 2001. His effective installation of former general manager Theo Epstein was widely praised throughout Boston, and both men played critical roles in helping to bring the city its first championship since 1918 in 2004.

"We, in The City of Boston and The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, are blessed to have the best medical care in the world", he said in a statement following the operation. "Thanks to (the brilliant and gifted medical professionals) I look forward to being on my feet, at full energy, and back at work after the new year.”

He also holds rings from Boston's titles in 2007, 2013 and 2018, although he stepped down from his duties in August of 2015. Lucchino is now recovering at his home in New Englad.
