Ex-WNBA Star Lisa Leslie to Be Idolized With Statue Outside Staples Center
By Kevin Aquino
Lisa Leslie will make history in Los Angeles when she is honored on Star Plaza, becoming the first female athlete to be immortalized outside the arena.
Fresh off of winning the BIG3 Championship and Coach of the Year with the Triplets, plans have been revealed to create a statue for Leslie outside of Staples Center.
The USC product will be the first female athlete to have a statue outside the famous arena, joining basketball legends Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Elgin Baylor and Shaquille O'Neal on Star Plaza. She'll even be getting her statue before Kobe Bryant.
Leslie spent her entire 12-year WNBA career with the L.A. Sparks, amassing an absolute monster of a resume: two-time champion, two-time Finals MVP, three-time league MVP, eight-time All-WNBA First Team, eight-time All-Star, two-time Defensive Player of the Year, two-time Defensive First Team -- the list goes on.
There's no word on how the statue will look, but recreating Leslie accomplishing the first-ever dunk in a WNBA game doesn't seem like a bad idea.
With the WNBA trending positively and becoming more popular, there is no better time to recognize one the league's pioneers and one of basketball's best.
