VIDEO: 49ers Plummet to Fifth Seed in NFC on Last-Second Julio Jones Plane-Breaking TD
By Scott Rogust
The very edge of the nose of the football just altered the hell out of the NFC playoff picture. The San Francisco 49ers were supposed to easily defeat the Atlanta Falcons in Week 15. Instead, they let their enemy linger, and suffered a cruel, heartbreaking fate on Sunday afternoon. With just five seconds remaining in regulation down 22-17, following an overturned Austin Hooper miracle TD catch, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan hit Julio Jones, who looked to be short of the goal line. But, after further review, Jones' football broke the plane ever so slightly, resulting in the latest of Atlanta scores.
The 49ers were just a few inches short of securing the victory, but the big body of Julio Jones proved to be too much.
So, for those counting at home, the Seattle Seahawks suddenly have homefield advantage, and the 49ers are now bereft of a playoff home game. Just like that. Cruel fate.
