Fans Actually Requested Rockies Minor League Affiliate to Change Name to 'Humpback Chubs'
By Ryan Flores
Whoever runs the Grand Junction Rockies social media account has clearly had enough.
Apparently, fans have been requesting that the rookie ball affiliate of the Colorado Rockies change their name to the "Grand Junction Humpback Chubs." The minor league club officially had enough on Thursday, as they took to social media to make it clear as day that they have no intentions of changing their name to something they see to be so offensive.
These tweets seemingly came out of nowhere for most fans, but there is some context behind them: a local fan named Ian Lummis had been taking the lead in campaigning to get the GJ Rockies to become the GJ Humpback Chubs in honor of the endangered species of fish native to the Colorado River.
Totally innocent.
Lummis' efforts have picked up steam as of late, with over 560 signatures and counting. This drew the attention of the rookie affiliate, which made them send out these tweets, and block anyone on Twitter, including Lummis, who has mentioned the idea of changing the team name.
Someone even created a parody page called the Grand Junction Chubs, which is absolutely incredible.
This account has since been suspended for an apparent violation of Twitter rules.
Yes, it sounds like an innuendo, but it wasn't exactly the intention of Lummis (as far as we know). It's very likely that the GJ Rockies never change their name, especially because of the way it would sound. However, it is for a very good cause. Long live the mighty humpback chub.
