Five fresh NFL faces that'll explode this season
For most players, it takes some time before NFL rookies make a serious impact for their team. Given the nature of the game and it's extremely high level of physicality, athleticism, and need for familiarity with the professional schematics of football, very few walk right into the league and ball out. However, there's a handful of special rookies poised to perform immediately and contend for the coveted rookie of the year honors in February.
1. Josh Jacobs~ Oakland Raiders
Unlike most of the 2019 draft, late first round selection Josh Jacobs at no. 24 wasn't a very surprising pick at all. Raiders second year head coach Jon Gruden has always valued the running back more than most head coaches. Jacobs was a do-it-all back for the Alabama Crimson Tide, totaling 887 scrimmage yards on the ground and through the air last season.
2. Devin White~ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Leadership. Instincts. Speed. When all three of these aspects of your game are elite as an inside linebacker, it can earn you a top five selection in the NFL draft. The Bucs drafted a gem in White, and will immediately insert him into a defensive unit that needs a talent like his to right the ship. Expect White to seriously contend for NFC Rookie of the Year, as the Bucs look for a new star and play maker on that side of the ball with Gerald McCoy moving on to Carolina this offseason.
3. N'Keal Harry~ New England Patriots
The dynastic New England Patriots have a reputation of getting the most out of smaller, white possession receivers: Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Chris Hogan etc over the years. For the first time since the Randy Moss days, the Pats have a big bodied, deep ball, red zone threat in former Arizona State receiver N'Keal Harry. Expect his 6'4 225 lb build and Tom Brady's consistent accuracy to mesh quite well, especially on obvious passing 3rd & long and red zone situations this season as he'll use his body to outbid defensive backs in 1 on 1 matchups.
4. Josh Allen~ Jacksonville Jaguars
As the draft approached, pundits and scouts were almost certain dynamic outside linebacker and Kentucky product Josh Allen would be a top five selection. In typical NFL draft fashion, the unexpected ensued and Allen fell to the seven spot in the waiting arms of the Jags. The rich continue to get richer as the Jags scary good defense adds a player in Allen who had 17 sacks and 21.5 tackles for loss last season for the Wildcats. Playing off of fellow disruptive pass rushers Calais Campbell, Yannick Ngakoue and Marcell Dareus, Allen should have a smooth transition into the pros.
5. Greedy Williams~ Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns are the most intriguing team entering the 2019 season. They have borderline super bowl level talent on paper, but must prove it on the gridiron as they've been the laughing stock of the league for some time. The defensive unit upgraded this offseason adding Olivier Vernon and Sheldon Richardson to the d-line. In addition, extremely talented former first overall pick in defensive end Myles Garrett is entering a huge third season. With all of these disrupting presences up front, expect second round rookie cornerback Williams to live by his first name and make plenty of game breaking plays on the back end right away. Guidance from second year corner and break out performer last year as a rookie in Denzel Ward will help Williams out tremendously as well. That'll be a very solid young corner duo for years to come.
