Five NFL Rookies Ready to Make an Impact
With NFL training camps underway and the preseason coming to an end, we've started to get a better glimpse of what the final rosters for each team will look like. And while the off-season has been highlighted by dramatic headlines over helmets and a potential CBA standoff coming in the near future, everyone seems to have forgotten all about the exciting new rookies taking the field. With that in mind, here are five rookies ready to make an immediate impact.
1. David Montgomery, RB - Chicago Bears
People forget how improved the Chicago Bears and Mitch Trubisky were under Matt Nagy in his first season. But with Jordan Howard off to the Eagles, many thought that Tarik Cohen would be the primary running back. That is, until David Montgomery arrived on the scene. Look to the rookie to take over primary running duties to start the season.
2. Erik McCoy, C - New Orleans Saints
The Saints are clearly gearing up for another Super Bowl run after last season's heartbreak with the return of Drew Brees and the signings of Latavius Murray and Jared Cook. But the Saints hit an unexpected snag with Max Unger's retirement. Luckily, they drafted Erik McCoy, who looks primed to take over and solidify the center spot.
3. Ryan Finley, QB - Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals hit the reset button with the end of the Marvin Lewis era. New head coach Zac Taylor will be looking to leave his own mark on the team going forward, and that could start at the quarterback position. The Bengals could turn the reins over to Ryan Finley, who has looked impressive in Taylor's system in the preseason.
4. Chase Winovich, DE/OLB - New England Patriots
Trey Flowers followed his old defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to Detroit, the Patriots need someone to take over the do-it-all hybrid DE spot on their defensive line. With an endless motor, Chase Winovich has already impressed the team by taking to Bill Belichick's scheme and looks to claim the spot for himself.
5. Preston Williams, WR - Miami Dolphins
No one knows what to expect with the Dolphins as they try to decide whether to compete now with Ryan Fitzpatrick or prepare for the future with Josh Rosen. But with Brian Flores at the helm, look for the team to competitive. Preston Williams has surprised so far and could end up taking over an underwhelming wide receiver group.
