Florida State Player Blasts Report Saying Coach Mike Norvell Individually Spoke With Players About Social Climate
By Scott Rogust
College football head coaches across the country have made it clear they've communicated and sent heartfelt messages to their players following the death of George Floyd. However, are some being more honest than others? During an interview with The Athletic earlier in the week, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell said he "had a lot of open communications" with his players in regards to Floyd's murder and the ongoing protests.
But on early Thursday morning, defensive tackle Marvin Wilson vehemently denied Norvell's statement, saying that the coach never spoke to each player individually, but instead sent out a generic mass text message. In response, Wilson says that he and his teammates will not attend voluntary workouts until further notice.
Florida State opened up their team facility on Monday for workouts for the first time in over two months after campuses across the country were shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. After three days, Wilson called for his teammates to hold out indefinitely. In fact, Seminoles defensive end Jamarcus Chatman, offensive lineman Darius Washington and cornerback Isaiah Bolden all shared his tweet.
Norvell was hired by Florida State this past December to replace Willie Taggart. Norvell is renowned for his work with the Memphis Tigers, whom he led to a 38-16 record and to a bowl game appearance in each of his four seasons.
Before even coaching a single game for the Seminoles, Norvell has already gotten on the bad side of his players. Things aren't going so great for FSU.
