Flyers and Pending UFA Kevin Hayes Closing in on Long-Term Contract
By Scott Rogust
NHL fans, you can now take another top pending unrestricted free agent off the board.
According to NHL insider Bob McKenzie, the Philadelphia Flyers and center Kevin Hayes are closing in on a contract agreement. The term is for seven years, worth $50 million.
Just a couple of weeks ago, the Flyers acquired Hayes from the Winnipeg Jets, in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick. Philadelphia wanted to gain exclusive rights to contract negotiations and head coach Alain Vigneault has familiarity with Hayes from during their time with the New York Rangers.
In today's NHL, the market for young forwards is coming at a rather hefty price. Hayes is just 26-years-old, but had difficulties with consistency. His maximum goal total in a season sits at 25, and this past season with the Rangers and Jets, he tallied a career-high 55 points.
While the Flyers laid down some serious coin for Hayes, they are obviously confident that he can help provide a spark in Philadelphia's offense for years to come.
