VIDEO: Former Braves Pitcher Adrian Devine Surprised With Special Garden While in His 'Final Days'
By Jerry Trotta
During a period where the country is categorically divided amid protests, this piece of news really couldn't come at a better time. A community in Gwinnett County, Ga. made an awesome gesture to former Atlanta Braves pitcher Adrian Devine after his latest cancer diagnosis. The former second-round pick recently lost his ability to speak, so he wrote a thank you letter to the Gwinnett community, which came together and created a special 'garden of love' for him.
“My dad got tongue cancer 15 years ago and he beat it," his daughter Renee Rafanelli told CBS46. "Then he had it again this year and he beat the tongue cancer, then it came back in his brain. He beat the brain cancer and now it came back to his lungs. The doctor advised his medical team it would be best to let him come home to hospice."
Unfortunately, Devine is at home with his family right now enjoying what's being called his 'final days.' While this is undoubtedly a difficult time for him, his daughter and all of his loves one, the special garden of love truly brought a smile to Devine's face. It just goes to show how much he means to many in his community.
Devine finished 14-15 across five seasons (253.2 innings) with the Braves, during which he registered a 4.40 ERA and 119 strikeouts.
As you can see in the video above, he still rocks his Atlanta cap with pride. Once a Brave, always a Brave.
