Former Browns DL Chris Smith Looking to Return to NFL Following Tragic Death of Girlfriend
By Jerry Trotta
Former Cleveland Browns defensive end Chris Smith was forced to cope with an unspeakable tragedy this past season. His girlfriend, Petara Cordero, was struck and killed in a traffic accident in September, roughly a month after the couple welcomed a baby daughter to the world.
Smith admirably attempted to play through his grief, but ended up getting cut by the organization in December.
After spending the necessary time to mourn his loss, Smith is apparently eyeing a return to the NFL, reports ESPN insider Adam Schefter.
This is wholly inspiring from Smith, who will likely never get over the tragedy.
Cordero had exited Smith's vehicle after it blew a tire on Interstate 90 in Cleveland. She was subsequently struck by an oncoming female driver, who authorities cleared of any wrongdoing after determining that she wasn't speeding or impaired at the time of the accident.
Smith, a fifth-round draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2014, has played in 60 career games, during which he compiled 8.5 sacks, 67 combined tackles, three forced fumbles, and 19 quarterback hits.
The 28-year-old will be entering his seventh season in the league in 2020, should he find a new football home.
