Former Cowboys GM Gil Brandt Has Bold Take on Who Will Be Best QB From 2020 NFL Draft
By Brady Williams
With Joe Burrow seemingly blowing the competition out of the water to be the top choice in the NFL Draft, there's little doubt he'll hear his name called first on April 23. He's the most obvious first pick; however, it's still one of the best classes in recent memory, with several standout players. In a Twitter Q&A session, former general manager for the Dallas Cowboys Gil Brandt presented a different opinion.
The NFL Hall of Famer said that he thinks Oregon Ducks quarterback Justin Herbert will be the best of the bunch. He offered no further explanation for his opinion.
Herbert is by no means a bad choice in this year's draft. He threw for 10,541 yards across four years, and with back-to-back 3,000 yard seasons, there's no denying he has incredible potential. Stacked up against the competition though, he's been playing third fiddle in most mock drafts and evaluations.
Joe Burrow's 5,671 yard, 60 touchdown season is insane. It's the most impressive draft resume in years, so for Brandt to declare anyone but the LSU product the top target is surprising. Still, it's hard to argue with the man who drafted Roger Staubach.
Brandt's take, while bold, isn't necessarily unfounded. Herbert is a serious talent. It's just such a tough call to say that he'll be better than Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa.
He's also stating, quite simply, that he believes Herbert will be the best pro five years down the line. This doesn't necessarily mean he has more potential -- these are two separate distinctions.
