Former Jets GM Makes Important Point About How Patriots Can Overcome Jarrett Stidham's Inexperience
By Michael Luciano
The New England Patriots will go from leaning on a 42-year-old future Hall of Famer in Tom Brady in 2019 to a 23-year-old in Jarrett Stidham with four career pass attempts in 2020.
In order to adapt to the stark change in experience and talent at the quarterback position, former New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum thinks that Bill Belichick will have to lean heavily on the deep, young running back room he has created over the last few years.
Belichick threw out of necessity once Brady became as good as he is, but he won those first three championships on the back of some power running games behind RBs like Antowain Smith, Kevin Faulk and Corey Dillon.
Sony Michel and James White will both be in for big seasons in 2020, as their usage should increase given the fact Stidham will lean on them heavily. Backups like 2019 third-rounder Damien Harris and the usually-reliable Rex Burkhead will likely get more touches than they did with Brady chucking the ball all over the field.
The Patriots might need to morph from the high-octane passing attack of the recent Brady years back into the ground-and-pound style of Belichick's early Patriots teams.
