Even 30 years after his troubles began, former New York Mets superstar Dwight Gooden can't seem to shake his drug-related demons.

"Doc" was arrested on June 7 for possession of cocaine, the same drug that Gooden became addicted to in 1987 and that worked to derail what was set to be a Hall of Fame career.

Gooden was pulled over for driving too slow and was charged with third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia and being under the influence.

Gooden broke onto the scene as a 19-year-old rookie with the Mets in 1984, when he led the league with 276 strikeouts, won Rookie of the Year, and came in second in Cy Young voting behind Chicago's Rick Sutcliffe.

His 1985 season is in the conversation for the single most dominant pitching season ever, as he went 24-4 with a 1.53 ERA and 266 strikeouts.

After that, however, Gooden career took a sharp turn downwards. He pitched for 14 more seasons at the big league level, but was never more than an average pitcher.

While his former teammate Darryl Strawberry had his career cut short with similar issues, Gooden, 54, is still not able to fully shake this habit.
