Former Mets No. 1 Draft Pick Shawn Abner Charged With Animal Cruelty in Disturbing Court Documents
By Jerry Trotta
Be prepared, folks, because this story is bound to fill all the animal lovers out there with both extreme rage and anguish.
Shawn Abner, the former No.1 overall pick by the New York Mets in the 1984 MLB draft, has been charged with a compilation of truly disturbing crimes -- aggravated cruelty to animals, causing serious bodily injury or death, cruelty to animals, and neglecting animals, according to court documents.
Per Local 21 News, Abner's "14-year-old male Husky, named Eagle was found decaying at his residence in Mechanicsburg (Pennsylvania)."
Appalling. Utterly appalling and downright sickening.
What makes the story all the more twisted is the fact that documents indicate the abuse took place on Aug. 7, the same day that Abner tweeted about the loss of Eagle.
On that day, Abner's neighbor, identified as Jesse Melhorn, checked in on the dog and found him "deceased and decaying so badly that it was becoming a part of the floor," per the Hamden Township police report.
Steve Junkin, chief of the department, understands that Abner has recently vacated the area and has not been seen by local residents for some time.
Feel free to admit that your night is ruined, because ours certainly is. Let's just hope that Abner is eventually brought into custody and delivered an appropriate sentence if the alleged acts are proven to be true.
