Today is a sad day for baseball, as former MLB star Raul Mondesi has been convicted on corruption charges that he was accused of in 2017. Mondesi has been sentenced to eight years in prison, and also fined an amount of 60 million pesos (roughly $3 million dollars).
Mondesi was accused of corruption during his time as mayor of his hometown of San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic. Mondesi became increasingly involved in politics after his retirement from Major League Baseball in 2005.
Mondesi spent 14 years playing in the majors, suiting up for seven teams, but spent his first seven seasons with the Dodgers, winning NL Rookie of the Year in 1994. The right fielder finished with over 1,500 hits, 271 homers and a .815 OPS.
The long time outfielder also has a son who currently plays for the Kansas City Royals, Adalberto Mondesi. Adalberto went by Raul Jr. for a few years before ditching the old monicker his rookie season with Kansas City.
Adalberto is in the midst of a breakout season for the Royals, establishing himself as a true star in baseball.
