Tragedy has struck the basketball world today. Amid rumors all morning that something terrible had happened to former NBA player Andre Emmett, Shams Charania has confirmed the sad news.

The former Seattle SuperSonics draft pick and Texas Tech Red Raiders All-American has been shot dead at the age of 37.

A Dallas native, Emmett played in the NBA for the Memphis Grizzlies and New Jersey Nets, as well as overseas. Most recently, he played in the BIG 3 for 3's Company. As of this writing, he's still listed on the team's roster via the official BIG 3 website.

Playing college ball under Bob Knight at Texas Tech, Emmett was a three-time First Team All-Big 12 selection, earning consensus All-America honors in 2004. He left the college ranks as the Red Raiders' No. 2-ranked scorer of all time.

In so many ways, his loss is a shocking and painful one. And as Charania notes, he only recently fathered a child.

Emmett's loss will be felt for a long time. From Lubbock, Texas and far, far beyond, this is a sad day marked by senseless tragedy. Our thoughts are with Andre's family and loved ones at this most difficult of times.
