The Philadelphia Phillies spent a massive sum of money to bring in star outfielder Bryce Harper last offseason. That's not preventing them from making another huge move this winter, however, if a former Phillies pitcher is to be believed.

During an appearance on MLB Network Radio on Thursday, Brad Lidge believes the team will throw "sick money" at free agent starter Gerrit Cole.

It may be the team pride showing, but Lidge sounds ultra-confident that Philadelphia has a serious shot at landing the AL Cy Young runner-up.

The Phillies added the likes of Harper, JT Realmuto, and Jean Segura last offseason with the hopes of emerging as top contenders in the NL East. Those names couldn't overcome the team's largest weakness, however: starting pitching.

Philadelphia accumulated a team average ERA of 4.64 in 2019, which ranked 17th in the game. Aaron Nola led the way with a 12-7 record and a 3.87 ERA, but other starters like Jake Arrieta, Vince Velasquez, and Zach Eflin struggled with ERAs over 4.00.

Cole dominated throughout the 2019 season, leading the way with a 2.50 ERA and a ridiculous 326 strikeouts whichever team lands him is getting an absolute ace who can strike fear in the heart of any hitter.

Last year, the Phillies spent "stupid money." This year, Philadelphia is going to spend "sick money," if we're to believe Brad Lidge. But if they really want Gerrit Cole's services, they'd need to outbid the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels, whom are heavy in pursuit.

That's a tall, tall task indeed.
