Former Seahawks Top Draft Pick Malik McDowell in Significant Legal Trouble
By Sean Facey
Malik McDowell has had quite a fall from grace.
The 35th overall pick from the Seattle Seahawks in the 2017 NFL Draft is now in significant trouble with the law, facing charges of truck theft, assault of a police officer and operating while intoxicated, the legal termination for drunk driving.
McDowell's initial arrest came in February, during which he fought a police officer who was trying to arrest him for drunk driving. Now, he is facing charges for the alleged theft of a Ford F-150 Raptor pickup truck, valued at around $74,000, stemming from an April incident.
The first charge could carry a prison sentence of up to two years. The second charge of operating while intoxicated could result in a 93-day sentence.
As for the stolen truck, McDowell claims that he bought it off the street for just $3,000. If convicted, he could receive a five-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $10,000.
McDowell is due to appear Thursday in Oakland County Circuit Court to stand trial.
He also was sued by the Seahawks following an ATV accident that he was involved in and was ordered to pay back his about half of his $1.5 million signing bonus.
McDowell was a standout player during his time at Michigan State University. He amassed 7.5 sacks and 24.5 tackles for loss in his 32 games with the Spartans.
His efforts bore fruit when the Seahawks picked him early in the second round in 2017, but he's never played for the team and his NFL career is starting to feel like it'll be over before it begins.
