Former Wake Forest QB Jamie Newman Officially Announces Decision to Transfer to Georgia
By Michael Luciano
Former Wake Forest quarterback Jamie Newman announced that he was leaving Winston-Salem in search of an opportunity to win a championship and improve his NFL chances, and he just landed at a great place to achieve both.
The former Demon Deacons quarterback announced that he will transfer to Georgia, where he is expected to take over at quarterback for Jake Fromm, who recently declared for the NFL.
Mario Cristobal and Oregon made a run at him, hoping to lock him down as a replacement for Justin Herbert, but in the end Newman decided to move to Athens.
Newman became the starter in the middle of the 2018 season, but he really emerged as a quality signal caller this past year. Newman completed 61% of his passes for 2,868 yards, 26 TDs, and 11 picks. He also ran for 574 yards and six scores.
The arm strength and playmaking ability will never be questioned with Newman, but he will need to learn how to operate under center and improve his accuracy over the middle of the field to keep the Bulldogs offense flowing.
Newman had some terrific games for an up-tempo head coach in Dave Clawson in Winston-Salem, but the lack of talent around him outside of Sage Surratt limited his production to a degree. With a team full of future pro players surrounding him in Athens, Newman could be well on his way to some college hardware while improving his draft stock.
