Francisco Cervelli Reportedly Has 'Some Sort of Deal' With Braves After Release From Pirates
By Parker White
Veteran backstop Francisco Cervelli was just released by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, but it looks like he won't be looking for a new team for very long.
According to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Cervelli will reportedly sign with the Atlanta Braves. The details of the deal and whether it's of the major league or minor league variety is not yet known.
Before this can become official, Cervelli would still have to clear waivers before he can ink his new deal. That shouldn't be too difficult, as Cervelli is still owed $11.5 million.
Cervelli is currently on the 60-day injured list with a concussion, but he should be able to return some time at the beginning of September. Of course, you also wonder if he's still a catcher?
Back in July, it was reported that Cervelli told a Pirates reporter that he was done catching because of the several concussions he's taken. Since, Cervelli has come out and denied ever saying that.
With Brian McCann just landing on the injured list with a knee injury and the lack of catching depth, it appears Cervelli would be signing with Atlanta to catch.
In just 34 games this season, the 33-year-old backstop is slashing .193/.279/.248 with one home run and five RBI. This comes a year after he belted a career-high 12 home runs with 57 RBI.
