Francisco Cervelli Tells Pirates Reporter He's Done Catching With Chilling Quotes
By Scott Rogust
Throughout his 12-year career, Francisco Cervelli has manned home plate for both the New York Yankees and now the Pittsburgh Pirates.
However, in an exclusive interview with Dejan Kovacevic of DK Pittsburgh Sports, Cervelli revealed that he will no longer play catcher due to health, a move that we all had hoped to see coming, for self-preservation purposes.
"That's enough," Cervelli said. "This time is different. I can't live like this."
Cervelli has been out of action since May 25 with a concussion after taking a broken bat to the chin. Unfortunately for Cervelli, this was the sixth concussion of his career, and he realizes the danger he's in by continuing to play behind home plate.
The veteran stressed that the decision wasn't forced on him by the Pirates organization; this was all on his own. After being recently cleared for baseball activity, Cervelli has been working out at third base and various other infield positions, and he's willing to play anywhere other than catcher.
"I'm ready to do anything," Cervelli told Kovacevic. "Wherever I am in the field, I'm still catching the ball, right?"
Athletes are becoming more aware of the serious long-term damage that concussions can have on the human brain. After suffering more than a handful of them, Francisco Cervelli is ready to move away from where he made his bread and butter in the MLB for the betterment of his health.
