Frank Gore Choosing Jets Over Raiders is Most Depressing NFL News of the Week
By Scott Rogust
Future Hall of Fame running back Frank Gore shocked the world on Tuesday after he opted sign a one-year contract with the New York Jets. There had to be better offers on the table for Gore, right?
As it turns out, the Las Vegas Raiders had sent a contract offer Gore's way, but the 37-year-old rusher chose to sign with the Jets due to his relationship with head coach Adam Gase.
“I got an opportunity to get back with a good friend and a guy I respect, and I’m happy that he wanted me to be on his team,” Gore said, via NFL Media. “And I’m happy to be around a guy who has done some great things in this league in Le'Veon Bell. That can motivate me. And I can help out the young kid that they just drafted, La’Mical Perine.”
A player willing to link up with Gase? We didn't think that was possible, considering the bridges he burnt with players during his tenure as Miami Dolphins head coach. But Gore has emerged as a believer in Gase's coaching style.
Prior to his stint with the Dolphins, Gase served as an offensive assistant with the San Francisco 49ers in 2008, where Gore was the team's bell-cow running back. That season, Gore rushed for 1,036 yards and six touchdowns on 240 carries. Gore reunited with Gase ten years later in Miami, where he rushed for 722 yards and 106 carries as the Dolphins' rotational back.
Losing out on Gore's services certainly stings for Jon Gruden and the Raiders. Gore could've served as a great backup option and mentor for Josh Jacobs. Instead, Las Vegas will go back to the drawing board to find another option, or they'll have to enter the 2020 season with a running back depth chart consisting of Jalen Richard and rookie Lynn Bowden Jr.
And that's all thanks to Gore rejoining Gase in New York, something we didn't see coming.
