Freddie Kitchens Was Clearly the Wrong Hire and Browns Fans Just Have to Deal With it

In the span of less than a year, Cleveland Browns boss Freddie Kitchens went from running backs coach to offensive coordinator to head coach. While he excelled in the first two positions, he has floundered as the main man under the weight of crazy expectations.

The Browns lost two of their first three games, including a 30-point beatdown at home by the Titans, with their only win coming against a pathetic Jets team that might as well play in the CFL. Kitchens stunk up the joint on Sunday Night against the Los Angeles Rams, with the worst playcall easily being a draw he ran on 4th and 9.

Many great coordinators have struggled with the task of running the entire team. Look no further than Bill Belchick assistants like Josh McDaniels and Romeo Crennel, or even legends like Wade Phillips and Dick LeBeau. Kitchens, who rode a hot streak after Hue Jackson's firing into the full-time job, in part due to his chemistry with Baker Mayfield, will join that dubious list if he keeps losing.

As the Browns usually do, they messed it up. They and the Jets had interviewed Todd Monken, Cleveland's current OC, for their head coaching job. Monken is now merely a sounding board for Kitchens, who calls his own plays. This team needed a true boss with legitimate coordinators calling the shots on both sides of the ball.

Safe to say the arrangement is leaving something to be desired.

The Kitchens era to kick off the 2019 season has been beyond underwhelming, and there's no end in sight given how difficult the Browns' upcoming schedule is.
