Free Agent OF Melky Cabrera Wants to Return to MLB But We're Not Sure Who'll Let Him
By Brendan Balsamo
Since Curtis Granderson's retirement early Friday, another former New York Yankee has had his name pop up in baseball conversation.
Former All Star and slugger Melky Cabrera is on the market, but it seems like no team is willing to pick him up. According to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, Cabrera isn't ready to retire yet after 15 seasons, and is still in good enough shape to continue playing.
However, it's hard to be confident he'll be picked up by any team. During his lone All-Star season in 2012 when he was playing with the eventual champion San Francisco Giants, he was suspended for 50 games after testing positive for high levels of testosterone.
Looking at his stats on a surface level it may seem he's a capable MLB player, as he slashed .280/.313/.399 in 122 games in 2019, but he also accumulated a -1.2 WAR and had the slowest sprint speed of all National League right fielders. He has maintained consistency at the plate all 15 years, but has struggled to remain a non-liability in the field, which could dissuade National League clubs from pursuing him.
It's going to be hard for Cabrera to break back into the bigs in 2020, but it seems the 35-year-old is determined to give it a shot.
