Full Details of Heat-Grizzlies Trade Involving Andre Iguodala Revealed
By Scott Rogust
Ever since Andre Iguodala was dealt to the Memphis Grizzlies this past summer, he wanted out. On Wednesday night, he got his wish in the form of a trade to the Miami Heat.
After much speculation over what was originally a three-team trade involving the Oklahoma City Thunder (which is no longer the case), the full details have been revealed.
According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Heat will acquire Iguodala, Solomon Hill, and Jae Crowder, while the Grizzlies will get Justise Winslow, Dion Waiters, and James Johnson.
All players, no draft picks.
As mentioned earlier, the Heat were engaged with the Thunder for the services of Danilo Gallinari, which would've made it a three-team deal. However, both sides couldn't reach an agreement due to the Heat's desire to maintain cap space in 2021. The talks have stalled, just hours before the NBA trade deadline.
The Heat, sensing they are on the verge of contending for the NBA Championship out of the Eastern Conference, decided to pull the trigger on a trade for Iguodala. To facilitate the move, the team signed the 36-year-old forward to a two-year, $30 million contract extension (though the second year is wisely an option, and largely for show).
As for the Grizzlies, they have a semi-firm hold on the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. Now, they flipped a veteran in Iguodala for a young player with high potential in Winslow, who can hopefully shake off the injury bug to contribute down the stretch.
The trade turned out to be a win-win for the Heat and Grizzlies, and we can't wait for both to compete against each other next season...for drama purposes.
