Gardner Minshew Mania Only Just Beginning After Win Over Titans
By Scott Rogust
The Week 3 edition of Thursday Night Football wasn't the most exciting matchup, but it did showcase the emergence of a budding NFL star. We're talking about Jacksonville Jaguars rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew II.
In prime-time, Minshew led the Jaguars to a 20-7 win over the AFC South rival Tennessee Titans.
Jacksonville entered the 2019 season as favorites for the AFC South crown following their addition of Nick Foles. Those hopes appeared to be dashed after the former Super Bowl LII MVP suffered a broken clavicle in Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Jaguars were left with no choice to bring in the rookie signal caller, and he's stepped up to the occasion.
On Thursday, Minshew carved up the Titans defense, completing 20-of-30 pass attempts for 204 yards and two touchdowns. His first of the night came exactly one play after the Adoree' Jackson punt fumble, as Minshew hit a wide open James O'Shaughnessy in the end zone.
His next touchdown was perhaps the most impressive of the night, as the former Washington State Cougar threw an absolute dime pass to receiver DJ Chark in the end zone to extend Jacksonville's lead to 14-0.
Minshew has now thrown a touchdown pass in each of his first three NFL games, joining Byron Leftwich (2003) as the only quarterbacks in Jaguars history to accomplish such a feat.
The sixth-round pick in this year's NFL Draft is not only proving doubters wrong, but also gaining a massive following. Whether it's his play on the field, his famous mustache, or his much talked about half-naked pregame stretching ritual, Minshew's become a social media icon.
Minshew Mania is running wild in the NFL, and it's only the start.
