Gary Sanchez Lands Back on 10-Day IL After Suffering Groin Injury
By Karl Rasmussen
The New York Yankees' injury woes continue, as the latest victim, Gary Sanchez, is for a stint on the shelf after tweaking his groin in the eighth inning on Tuesday night against the Minnesota Twins.
Sanchez has been placed on the 10-day IL with a left groin strain. The hope around the Bronx and beyond is that this latest issue won't keep him out much longer than the minimum required stint on the sideline.
Sanchez has been ice cold of late, slashing just .103/.187/.176 (good for an abysmal .363 OPS over his last 16 games. During that span, he hast just 1 home run, 6 RBI and has struck out 22 times in 68 at bats.
Due to his prolonged slump, this may be the perfect time to let Sánchez clear his head for a couple weeks before returning to the lineup, but it must be said that there's no like-for-like replacement for El Gary when he's in the zone.
In a corresponding move, the Yankees recalled catcher Kyle Higashioka from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, as well as Nestor Cortes who will swap spots with the demoted Jonathan Holder.
On the year, Sanchez still has an impressive line. He has 24 home runs, 58 RBI, and is slugging .508, earning himself a spot in the All-Star Game. Those are outstanding numbers out of the catcher position, but his latest slump has been lengthy, and rather eye-popping.
