VIDEO: Gary Sanchez Very Clearly Victimized by Brutal Make-up Call After Missed Foul Tip in Extras
By Jerry Trotta
Umpires attempting to make amends for blown calls later in games is a fairly prevalent concept within Major League Baseball. For some reason, they feel as though getting back at a particular batter or pitcher is more authentic than calling a clean game the rest of the way. Whatever the case, that notion inexplicably held true in Game 2 of the ALCS on Sunday night. Check out Gary Sanchez getting bailed out by the home plate ump, who claimed that the Yankees catcher foul tipped a ball in the dirt on a clear strikeout.
Folks, El Gary missed that baseball by a few inches. We're not sure how the ump determined that Sanchez made contact with that pitch, but that incompetence says a lot about the next clip we are about to show you.
In his very same at-bat, a pivotal one in the top of the 11th inning when the Yanks had runners on first and second with two outs, the umpire called the two-time All-Star out on strikes on a fastball that was markedly off the plate.
It's quite obvious Sanchez was victimized by the ump understanding he got a call wrong earlier in the same at-bat.
If you slow the footage down you can see that the stellar frame job by Astros catcher Robinson Chirinos makes that BALL look a lot closer to the strike zone than it should have. In slow-mo, that pitch would've came close to drilling a right-handed batter who enjoys crowding the plate.
It's the ALCS for crying out loud. Can we please clean this up?
