Rodrigo Blankenship's Latest Tweet Proves He's a Very Good Kicking Teacher
By Scott Rogust
There was plenty of hype surrounding the likes of Joe Burrow and Chase Young before the NFL Draft, but all of social media had their eyes peeled to see where bespectacled kicker Rodrigo Blankenship would land, too. Of course, we got our answer in the form of the Indianapolis Colts, who signed him as an undrafted free agent.
Blankenship was the most recognizable place kicker in all of college football not just because of his trademark sports goggles, but because of his tremendous skillset, too. Plenty of aspiring kickers can learn a lot from the former Georgia Bulldog. As it turns out, Blankenship has already gotten a head start on his post-NFL career - as a kicking trainer.
During the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Blankenship held a two-hour training session with 5-star kicking recruit (per Kohl's Football Kicking and Punting Camp) Kriston Esnard. "Hot Rod" put the Decatur, GA native through the gauntlet, having him kick nine consecutive field goals from the 40-to-60 yard range on the field.
And Esnard nailed every single one of them while wearing a face mask! That's not only a testament to the high schooler's kicking ability, but to Blankenship's teaching.
This is a great use of downtime for Blankenship, as he awaits the league reopening team facilities to allow professional training to begin. From there, he will not only fight for a spot on the Colts, but for the chance to replace Adam Vinatieri as their long-term starting kicker.
Whether Blankenship makes it in the NFL or not, he's got a pretty good gig lined up for him down the line.
