Georgia is a Terrible Landing Spot for Former USC Quarterback JT Daniels
By Michael Luciano
Coming off an injury and having surrendered the USC starting quarterback gig to Kedon Slovis, JT Daniels knew he needed a fresh start. The place he picked for said fresh start, however, looks extremely impractical if he wants to see the field soon.
Daniels announced that he was trading in the cardinal and gold of USC for the red and white of Georgia, confirming he's heading down to Athens for the 2020 season.
Why, of all places, did he think Georgia was the place he could find playing time?
Jamie Newman, a transfer from Wake Forest, should be the unquestioned starter in 2020. He's bigger, a better athlete, more experienced, and in possession of a stronger arm. Newman could even vault himself into the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft with a strong season in Athens.
Daniels has competition for the backup spot as well. 4-star recruits Dwan Mathis and Carson Beck both have the playmaking ability to compete with Daniels, while top 2021 QB recruit Brock Vandagriff will be on his way next year. Even when Newman leaves, Daniels isn't guaranteed playing time.
Daniels left LA in search of playing time, but he will likely have to work harder to earn a starting gig in Athens than would have if he'd just stayed at USC and competed with Slovis.
