Geronimo Allison's Assessment of Packers' Secondary Should Get Fans Pumped
By Michael Luciano
For years on end, the Green Bay Packers secondary was more akin to a Big 12 defense than a collection of NFL defensive backs, due in large part to some confusing scheme and personnel moves by Dom Capers and Mike Pettine.
GM Brian Gutekunst invested heavily in the secondary in recent offseasons, spending first round picks on Jaire Alexander and Darnell Savage, using a second round pick on Josh Jackson, and splurging in free agency on former Bears safety Adrian Amos.
Wide receiver Geronimo Allison has taken note of this improved secondary and how they've already started to gel.
The Packers managed to mess up their secondary in nearly every possible fashion. They neglected it in the draft, but also managed to waste what few picks they made in that area on players like Quinten Rollins. They weren't aggressive in free agency, but did manage to sign Morgan Burnett to a deal long after his days as an elite safety were done.
With Gutekunst at the helm, this unit is already looking like one that both has more raw talent from top to bottom and is a better scheme fit in Pettine's aggressive 3-4 defense.
If all these pieces click, Aaron Rodgers won't have to throw for 300 yards and three touchdowns to keep the Packers in games, the defense will be keeping opponents off the board and coming up with the necessary stops.
