By Jerry Trotta
The New York Yankees can't seem to go a week without being dealt devastating news on the injury front. Thus far, James Paxton, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton are all expected to begin the regular season on the injured list, while Luis Severino has already underwent Tommy John surgery.
While all of those players project to be integral components of a club with real championsip aspirations club, there is one player whom the Yankees simply cannot afford to see shelved: staff ace Gerrit Cole.
The 29-year-old superstar is presently battling an illness and spent Monday away from the team. Though this isn't back-breaking news, it all but confirms that the Bronx Bombers are cursed.
That sound you hear is every baseball fan in the Bronx urging the Yankees to bubblewrap the $324-million hurler.
Manager Aaron Boone noted that Cole was sick on Monday, but came in on Tuesday and spent almost the entirety of the game against the Red Sox in the dugout. The veteran right-hander has been scheduled to start against Detroit on Thursday, and it's still expected that Cole will be well enough by then to take the mound.
At this rate, all Yankees fans can do is hope and pray that a cold is the worst that Cole has to endure this season.
