Gerrit Cole's Yankees Debut Monday Night Isn't on Television and That Makes Absolutely No Sense
By Adam Weinrib
Monday's the day every Yankee fan has had circled on their calendar for two months now: Gerrit Cole will toe the rubber in primetime against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He'll chuck an inning. You won't see it.
Because, unless you're willing to strain your eyes and search for a Periscope provided by some lucky fan sitting down the first base line, this game will not be televised in any capacity, bucking all logic and reason.
If you weren't satiated by the above video of Cole zippin' it, may we recommend checking in on Monday night's game via...Pittsburgh radio?!
Somehow, the Yankees' first two games of the spring against the Blue Jays and Rays, featuring JA Happ and Jonathan Loaisiga, were very much broadcast on television, with Sunday's contest nationally featured on MLB Network.
But on Monday, when the team's centerpiece takes the mound and approximates Opening Day, he'll be doing so shrouded in darkness. Why so secretive? Worried about the fans gleaning too much from Cole's efforts and blowing the whistle on what makes him so nasty? Hint: It's his entire arsenal.
Of course, when the curtain rises on the 2020 season, Cole will hopefully be on the mound on Opening Day in Baltimore. But, Monday is an unofficial Yankees milestone; this game will also feature the Spring debuts of Giancarlo Stanton (who has plenty to prove), Gary Sanchez and Brett Gardner.
But, thanks to some confusing decisions from high-ranking members of the marketing team, it might as well be invisible. And that's a shame.
