Giancarlo Stanton Campaigning for Yankees to Sign Both Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg
By Chris Russo
After another checkered October, Giancarlo Stanton is overly zealous about bringing a championship to New York, and he is serious about bringing two high-profile free agents to the Bronx.
Stanton told TMZ this week that he's not out for minor upgrades. Instead, he wants the Yankees to sign both probable AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole and World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg.
Stanton spoke to TMZ while in his native Los Angeles, and added supporting evidence for Cole and Strasburg to play in pinstripes by noting Cole's childhood Yankee fandom. He also claimed Strasburg would be a great fit because the two were both rookies in 2010 in the NL East.
Like Stanton, both Cole and Strasburg grew up in southern California, with Cole in Orange County, and Strasburg in San Diego. However, despite rumors Cole will sign with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to be closer to home, Stanton solidified the idea that a California kid can thrive in New York. In fact, he never wants to leave.
Certainly, the Yankees would be open to such a pairing of stars at the right price. In many ways, their run to the ALCS came in spite of a pitching staff that posted a 4.31 ERA over the course of the full regular season, with only James Paxton posting an ERA below 4.00 from the rotation.
We're also talking about a staff that's losing CC Sabathia's leadership (and whatever impact recently-departed pitching coach Larry Rothschild brought).
Things will look a lot different in 2020 regardless, so why not upgrade in the most stunning way possible?
Getting Cole and Strasburg would be a tall task, but if any team has the money in their coffer, it's the Yankees.
