Giancarlo Stanton Plays in Simulated Game as Rehab Assignment Gets Closer
By Parker White
New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton has been a walking injury this season, but on Tuesday he got nine plate appearances in a simulated game and went through running drills. To be sure, encouraging news for the Bronx faithful.
Stanton was originally sidelined with a strained left biceps and left shoulder injury. He began a rehab assignment and played for Class-A Tampa in late May, but subsequently ended up shut down due to left calf tightness.
It's a great sign that Stanton took some at-bats today, but it's even more positive that he ran, which is one of the last things teams want to see a player do before sending them on a rehab assignment.
Before the Yankees put Stanton back on a rehab assignment, they need to make sure he's healthy and doesn't have any other ailments that might flare up once he begins playing again. They've been able to play great baseball without him, but at some point, they need his power bat in the middle of the lineup. Perhaps the light is finally visible at the end of the tunnel.
