Giancarlo Stanton's Injury Leaves Door Open for Cameron Maybin Once He's Able to Return
By Jared Kish
With Giancarlo Stanton expected to be out for the whole month of July after suffering a PCL strain in his short return to the Yankees, another outfielder who is currently on the injured list and was having a tremendous season so far has a spot waiting for him when he gets back.
Cameron Maybin hit the IL with a Grade 2 calf strain, which is unfortunate considering how well he was playing. With Stanton hitting the IL now, and Maybin expected back before him, Maybin has a chance to pick up right where he left off.
After being acquired by the Yankees from the Cleveland Indians, Maybin is batting .314 with 27 runs scored, 5 dingers, 14 RBI and 7 stolen bases in 42 games.
The Yankees outfielder did a fabulous job filling in for Stanton and Aaron Judge earlier this year when they were both on the IL. Manager Aaron Boone had no trouble penciling his name into the lineup every day.
There were still question marks surrounding his status, however, given the Yankees got back Aaron Hicks and Stanton and Judge were on the horizon. The team already has Brett Gardner off the bench, so many were unsure if they'd roll with five outfielders. Perhaps Maybin's injury was a blessing in disguise.
With Stanton due to miss another large chunk of the season, the door is officially open for Maybin to build off of his impressive season once he's able to get back on the field.
