Giants and Nationals Reportedly Discussing Drew Pomeranz Swap
By Jerry Trotta
It still remains to be seen, but their lack of action thus far has suggested that the San Francisco Giants will not sell-off assets ahead of the impending trade deadline and push for the NL Wild Card berth.
That doesn't mean that Farhan Zaidi and Co. aren't opposed to offloading expendable pieces, however. Per MLB insider Jon Morosi, San Fran is considering trading starter-turned-reliever Drew Pomeranz to the Nationals, though Washington's potential return package has not been reported as of yet.
The 30-year-old left-hander has impressed since losing his spot in the Giants rotation, albeit in a microscopic sample size. Pomeranz has tossed 4.1 scoreless innings to go with six strikeouts while conceding just one hit and no walks since the move to the bullpen.
Everybody and their mother knows that the Nats are in the market for a bullpen arm and they could probably scoop up the veteran southpaw on the cheap.
His numbers out of the pen are impressive, but the University of Mississippi product was rancid as a starter for the first 3 months of the year. Across 72.1 innings, Pomeranz logged a dreadful 6.10 ERA and equally heinous 4.67 FIP.
This move makes sense for both parties. As Ken Rosenthal notes, the Giants already have two big league left-handers in the pen, with two minor league hurlers ready for a potential call-up.
